It was founded by Ganesha when Ravana gave it to him to carry. Ganesha took the form of cowherd named Baiju, hence it is known as Baijnath Jyotirlinga.

There are several other important Linga like Pishachmochaneshwar Mahadev, Indreshwar Linga, Devodaseshwar Linga, Kritivaseshvar Mahadev, Vyagreshwar Linga, Pratikeshwar, Kapileshwar, Kumareshwar Linga, Jambukeshwar Mahadev, Annamalaiya Mahadev, Shirkalhasteshwar Mahadev, Chidambaram Nataraj and Tikambareshwar Mahadev.
