Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple is situated at the bank of Shipra river in the city of Ujjain. It is different from all other Jyotirlinga because it is facing south.
A full Kumbha fair is organized here in every 12 years and half Kumbha fair in every 6 years.
Ujjain was the capital of King Vikramaditya. Great poet Kalidas used to learn and practice here. Even Shri Krishna and Sudama did their education from here. You can also find the abode of Guru Sandipan.

Story of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
A demon name Dushan lived in the Ratnamala mountain ranges. He attacked the citizen of Ujjaini. A brahmin devotee of Shiva was praying there. People went into his shelter and asked for help.
Brahmin organized a yajna and requested Shiva to come and help them. Mahakal emerged out through bursting the Earth. He killed Dushan and saved all.
Brahmin requested Mahakal to stay and bless the people of Ujjaini. Mahakal enlightened everybody by realizing them their powers and need to fight in union without fear. He blessed the Linga with his energies and it is known as Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.
Rites of Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
This temple is treated as the master of the region. The Shiva Linga is covered with the ash of funeral in the morning.
According to KotiRudra Samhita, those who pray in this temple stays free from the fear of unnatural death.
Shaktipeeth in Ujjain
There is a temple, Harisiddhi devi which is one out of 51 Shakti Peeth in the world. Here dropped the elbow of Sati.
Kal Bhairav Temple
At a distance of about 3 miles, there is an old huge temple known as Kal Bhairav. It was established by King Bhadrasen.
There is also a place called Bhairav Gad where King Ashoka established a prison.
